Thanks so much PP for the detailed response. That is really helpful information. She’ll probably end up with a B or B+ in Algebra so if she decides to take the SOL, I’ll encourage her to also take the Geometry SOL next year in case she eventually decides to have the Algebra 1 grade not count towards her GPA.

The MS classes do count toward the verified credits in APS. You have to accept the grade in that class to count the SOL.

We initially, when he took the classes, opted to keep all DS's MS credits. It was a mix of As and Bs and I anticipated that would also be what he'd get in HS so wasn't too concerned about it impacting his GPA. He became a much better student in HS, all As 2nd half of 10th, all 11th and wanted to drop the MS B grades. When we reviewed DS's transcript with his counselor in 11th, we learned that he could drop one of them but not the other because that one was counting as a verified credit and he did not now have an opportunity to take another SOL to meet that verified credit need. He'd have had to take an SOL in one of his 9th grade classes but didn't because at that point he didn't need to.

Does anyone know if HS level classes taken in MS count towards the verified credit requirement? There is a thread on the FCPS forum about this and some posters believe FCPS requires the verified credits to be taken while in 9-12. Any idea what the policy is for APS? DD is taking Algebra 1 this year as an 8th grader and is wondering if she should take the SOL. She will be taking Geometry in 9th grade and could take the SOL then but we are wondering if she should just get the required math SOL out of the way this year. She chose all distance learning for the remainder of the year so taking the SOL would require her to go into school - something she is willing to do so that is not an issue. I believe the state Board of Education also is allowing - but not requiring - school districts to give high school verified credits to students who score at least 350 on their exam - normally a 400 is required. Anyone know if APS is going to lower the passing score to 350?
