I’m a HS teacher and always tell them they can go whenever they need to and don’t need to ask. Many students still do and send me a private message.

My children are younger and this came up before. One says she always asks her teacher because she is worried she will get called on when she’s not there. She knows she’s allowed to go when she wants, but is constantly worried that is the one time her teacher will ask her a question and there won’t be a response. My other child goes when he wants and isn’t concerned about this. They have different personalities.

It's so the teacher will know not to call on the student during that time and so the teacher knows the student hasn't permanently left the class. I've heard my DC's teacher say if a student doesn't respond to her question she'll have to mark them as cutting class.

So they don’t get to say, “I was in the bathroom” when they miss material or graded work.

What if a kid goes in the bathroom and doesn’t come back out? How do we know they didn’t have a medical emergency or something? Ivan see a teacher being accused of negligence because a student hung themselves or was self-harming and the teacher didn’t notice they never returned.

They are at home, most of them have their camera offs, so they can vape while in class

I’d laugh if a student at home asked for permission. But that’s just me.

Virtual kids need permission to use "bathroom" at home. I don't think my DS ever asked for permission he just goes, but I can hear some random kid if they can use the bathroom.
