NP. I think we’d make good friends. Lemme know if you want to go on a girls trip to Tahiti sometime. My braided knot engagement ring will not attract undo attention at customs.

OP here. It wasn’t a brag. A friend is planning to propose soon an asked how much I spent and where I bought it. He told another friend and they both said I was crazy for spending that much on a ring.
It was a brag. You could have just told him where you bought it and that it was expensive. He doesn't need to know what you spent. You fiancee would be embarrassed by your boorish behavior.

It depends entirely on your wealth (income and assets). It's been said you should spend the equivalent of three months salary on an engagement ring - this stemming from an ancient De Beers advertisement.
Consider that a nice house in this area is more than 1 million, and that college right now is 40-80K per year. College costs increase faster than inflation.

I bought my girlfriend a 20k ring to propose to her in a couple of months. It’s amazing quality and she will love it. I had the money and the expense wasn’t an issue. Some people are telling me how dumb I am for spending that much on a ring. Is that extravagant or a reasonable price for a ring?
