Mine started out crate trained at night but when I lost a family member this year I let mine start sleeping on my bed. Now if she’s not on the bed she is allowed on one particular couch. It’s an older couch and I just put a slipcover on it.

She’s good about staying off other furniture. Maybe let her have one piece and cover it.

It’s colder on the ground even if with a dog bed so maybe yours is just looking for a cozier spot.

We put dining room chairs on their sides across the whole thing.

He prefers his crate. We never allowed him on the furniture, and crate-trained him, so...

Upturned cushions? Turn the cushions on their sides?

Your dog is getting on your furniture any time you’re not there to see it.

If it really means that much to you to keep it off the furniture, you need a texture detergent, like an overturned plastic office chair mat with carpet-gripping spikes.

I’d ask if the befit of keeping the dog off the furniture is really worth it though.

My dog always slept in a crate from day 1--sofa probably didn't even cross his mind as an option, since he wasn't allowed on during the day. After a while we stopped locking the crate door, and he still happily stayed in all night.

Is he allowed on the sofa during the day? If so, it might be confusing to him if he can't get on at night.

Sorry OP, no advice but this makes me smile.

We'd always put a few coffee table books on the sofa to block my childhood dog at night, only to find warm indentations between them when we came down in the morning.

How old is he? Ours did this as a puppy but then internalized the rule and doesn’t seem to do it anymore. He’s also a very solid sleeper though so maybe that’s part of it.

+1...at that point you might as well move her dog bed onto the couch.

We used an old plastic baby gate (leftover from the baby years) that we put on the sofa before we went upstairs for the night. It fut the dimensions of the sofa and it was easy to stow away during the day. It was plastic-y and the "texture" (can't think of the right word) made it uncomfortable even if he jumped up on the couch it was not comfortable to lay on.

We topped it off with a can of pennies too.

Ours is getting more clever and more bold about moving the items we place there at night before we go upstairs. He has plenty comfy beds of his own, plus DCs welcome him on their beds. Yet he prefers the forbidden zone....

Anyone?
