It’s a synthetic oil with certain additives that are needed for my particular car. Mostly it’s used in racing engines. It’s not super expensive, but you have to order it from places that sell specialty oils. You won’t find it on a store shelf.

He is just being a show off. Our cars and family cars have run just great for years and years with shop oil changes.

I have a aftermarket modified high performance engine in my car (Dodge Challenger Hellcat) that requires a synthetic oil with very specific friction inhibitor additives to deal with higher shear forces and high compressor rpm within the supercharger unit. The local Jiffy Lube or other oil change place isn’t going to have the oil I use on hand. They would have to order it, and mark it up accordingly. But I can get it delivered to my house for less than they’d pay for it. So instead of paying $29/quart for 6 quarts, I only pay $11/quart for 6 quarts. Same goes for the filter. So I save about $80 for every oil change, which is required every 2,000 miles on my car, instead of every 6,000 on most cars. So it works out to being a couple hundred cheaper over the same interval as a “normal” car if I had the oil change place order it. Honesty, I’d change it myself, but I’m lazy. Clearly you don’t like me. And I’m good with that. But I know more about cars by myself than any 4 other people you know put together.

Just do it in your driveway/garage.

If you're going to purchase oil and filter yourself, why not just go the extra step and change the oil yourself?

They charge more because they’re in business to make money. They have overhead. You don’t understand how economics work.

You know you can buy food at the grocery store for cheaper than eating out right? Take a raw steak to a restaurant and get them to cook it for you, see how that works out.

NP. Agreed. My dad always purchased the highest quality and initially replaced it himself. Then at a local car shop (another state) He did most of the work on both our vehicles. We were quoted exorbitant prices based on the brands of the cars.

In DC I haven’t found anyone who would do that. Where do you take your cars?

Any can do it but need to find reliable ones. Also many will just say no. Would recommend but not in the area anymore. Hopefully you will receive responses,

Not OP, but I used to do it this way. $10 for 5 gal of synthetic Mobile 1 (on sale) + $7 for decent oil filter + $20 labor = $37. If you use Jiffy Lube, an synthetic oil change costs around $60, and the oil and filter are not that good.

Any gas station's shop will do. I normally watch them doing it.
I think it's $20 for labor.

Why would you do this?

Anyone know of reliable places where you can bring your own motor oil? I saw someone else ask this on another forum but no one responded. Wondering if anyone even does this.
