+1 this is true. Super Y is good to stay sharp 11 via 11, but due to the larger rosters technical training is limited.

In 'close' order of competitiveness (check their website, tryouts for Summer Super Y teams are happening now):
Chantilly
Great Falls/Reston
Herndon
Northern Virginia United

NVUFC and Arlington have already had Super Y tryouts. This is NVUFC’s inaugural season and it’s loaded with ECNL and NCSL D1/2 talent. It’s also Great Falls Reston’s inaugural season too. I really don’t want to be negative, but a player who is a bit better than most rec players won’t make it there. I’d say hire a private trainer/ small group trainer who can help you kid get up to speed. If you really want to make it try out for NVSC’s Super Y team. My DS went to one of their tryouts and missed the next one and still made it. They have struggled to fill their rosters this year. If you don’t believe me check their social media! They have had like 4 supplemental tryouts

Thank you for your post. I should clarify that DS’s current coach said he could probably make it on a lower tier travel team. However, he already plays another travel sport and can’t actually do travel soccer. DS loves playing soccer and would like to get better over the summer when he has more time.

Oh that makes sense! He’s probably fine then. I thought he was new to sports!

Agree with this in principal. However both of those programs require a certain level of skill to participate - and borderline rec/travel might not be a fit. I do think it would be worth reaching out to the organizers to enquire whether they have a course that would be a fit for your son.

Those are both good programs, but depending where located, can be an unbearable schlep.

Additional clarification, when I said DS was ‘t quite at the travel level, I was thinking more top tier travel, like DS is in his other sport. I should have been more careful in the way I described his level of play.

Thank you! I will try calling around.

Thank you for these recommendations. HP Elite seems to only take existing travel soccer players?

We are in S. Arlington, near Shirlington, so would especially appreciate recommendations closer to us.

OP here. His current (rec) coach recommended exactly the opposite. He said most kids at camp would not be as good as DS. He also said most camps teach to the lowest common denominator - his words not mine - so that the better kids don’t improve a lot. He recommended finding a competitive summer team.

My son is U13, has been playing at a level between rec and travel. He’s better than most rec kids, but not quite at travel level.

I’m looking for a team/league he can play on his summer that will boost his skills. Any ideas?
