PP here. A good trick is to find a fabric you like at Crate and Barrel. Believe it or not, you can use one of their 15% off coupons on fabric. Only trouble is if it gets delayed.

A great place. Knowledgeable. Professional. They did a sofa and a chair for me. Both needed lots of work—hardwood refinishing, springs retied, full reupholstering with cushions. They have many beautiful, high-quality options for fabrics and finishes. They offer lots of choices for upgrades or downgrades, and they explain how different choices impact durability, cost, and quality. Especially appreciate their cost breakdowns—you understand where each cent goes. For the sofa, I brought my own cotton velvet. Total cost of reupholstery work, sans fabric, was ~2700 (fabric cost was 800). For the chair, I bought the fabric through them, and total cost was ~1450. Have one more chair to do and will go back for sure.

If it is a high-quality sofa it can be worthwhile to upholster -- e.g. if it would cost $4500+ new, reupholstery saves money and you can get exactly what you want.

Thanks, reason I ask is because I just bought a lovely Bassett sectional and a couch. Sales lady was pushing the quality and how it can be reupholstered when the time is right. But with these types of prices, it doesn’t seem like it’s worthwhile. Perhaps if I had something like a Stickley or something.

Slipcovers would be more like $1000-1500

If it’s in good shape, they may be able to just put the new fabric right over the old. This would not be the “right” way to do it but it would save some labor cost.

I didn’t use them because I decided to just go new but I had a large chair (double seater) couch and Sette in a set and with performance fabric Cryton included the cost was just under 3k for all. You should go in person with a picture of your couch and your measurements. The lady will tell you right off the bat. They are not fancy! But I bet they do a good job.

On the cheap side, it would be at least $1,500 as you'll also have to pay for fabric and potentially foam on top of labor. (I got a tiny settee recovered for $900, and the job wasn't even done properly). Reupholstering with plain fabric is cheaper because there is no pattern that has to be matched across the sofa. To get an idea of pricing, check Chairloom's website and see what prices are indicated for pieces that most resemble yours. Prices around here will be higher.

We inherited a really well-made sofa and chair, with great modern lines. The upholstery is a pattern and color we don't really love. I know re-upholstery is expensive... but... how expensive? Are we talking a grand? three grand? More? Sofa is 82" long. Thanks, guys!
