I think it is hilarious. We live in a city. Don't be stupid people.

Not even sure this makes sense.

So because you live in a city, people are automatically dishonest and thieves?

Kind of a fringe racist statement.

What? That’s ridiculous.

No one thinks it's weird how many roaming car thieves there are? This rate of thief:running car seems pretty high statistically. Why doesn't MPD leave a car running with keys, and do that thing where it locks/stops when driven away and then they can talk thru the radio and force the thieves to surrender hands up (all on video). Since for every running car there seems to be a thief handy, seems like they could all quickly be apprehended + charged this way. Then they could go to a warm jail cell (Charles Allen thinks some of DC car thieves are seeking warmth, according to his letter to constituents).

This really ticked me off more than I expected. No wonder the MPD commanders are at the ANC meeting every month lecturing us about not leaving keys in the car. Our own council members can't follow their recommendations!

It's so stupid. It wastes gas, causes air pollution, and is dangerous (like people who get carjacked with their kids in the car--what if your kid took the car out of park?). How hard is it to restart your car when you get back?

Other than Cheh and Evans, Mendelson's gf had her car stolen at a gas station a few years ago: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/dc-council-chairman-mendelsons-girlfriends-car-stolen-while-she-pumped-gas/54136/ at least she didn't leave the car running, but she had her purse in the car and the doors were unlocked.

Not PP but I see it more as a density issue not a race issue. If you live in a rural area or suburb, you leave your car on in the driveway and no one will be walking around and see it. You leave it turned on with keys in the ignition in a high trafficked area? Higher chances of it being stolen! It is city living 101. Don't leave expensive items in your car, don't leave your car turned on.

+1 Another NP here. Grew up in DC and the only place I’ve ever seen people leave their keys in the ignition is the 500-person town in Nebraska where my MIL grew up. Even there I think it is nuts.

How have TWO Councilmembers (ok, one former) done this in the past year?! Just turn the damn car off and take the keys like a normal person!

This is not a racist anything. Its a matter of fact. Don't be stupid. You're not living in the middle of nowhere with 40 acres around you and no one else but your wife cooking in the kitchen around.

The more people, the more opportunities for potential crime (unless you're specifically being targeted - then its just whatever).

He left the keys in the car. Of course someone will steal it.
It’s a crime of opportunity.
