My son started to pay some attention in 5th grade. Would comb his hair before school, spend some time in front of the mirror, comment on his looks, etc. iIn 7th, I still need to remind the kid to shower occasionally, and he doesn’t hesitate to walk the dog in pajama pants and crocs, though some of that I’m sure is pandemic related.

When I became friends with someone who was a former hairdresser, she offered to cut DS's hair one day. It transformed his LIFE. He all of a sudden saw how good looking he could be and ramped up everything else to match his haircut.

Funnily enough, she told me that she gives every boy who has hair that will tolerate it, the exact same style because it basically looks good on all of them.

11-12 and 9. I think it varies based on the other kids they are around.

It’s nice that he still doesn’t care about clothes and is happy to wear whatever is at the top of his drawer from Old Navy or Target. If notice some of his friends are starting to wear more styled hair cuts and more coordinated clothes. No real complaints, just curious when others sons have started to care more about their clothes etc.

From observing DS's friends, 10-12 seems to be the age range in which this shift happens. Although he is showing more interest in hygiene and skin care (with a lot of initial prompting from DH and I), 13 yo DS still has no interest in style. Despite my efforts to help, sigh.
