Super weird to turn down a thermostat that’s set anywhere in normal range (I’d think 67-73) in someone else’s house. Unless for some reason your room was much hotter than the other areas, like if event was somehow turned in your direction and not in others. Otherwise, I would never mess with someone’s thermostat. Or just takeoff covers and sleep. That said, as a host I cannot imagine ever calling out someone for changing the thermostat. I might be cranky and my husband might be best, but I would never say anything and it would be forgotten very quickly.

I would never do this unless explicitly told I was welcome to do so. And would find it odd if a guest did it.

However, their reaction was over the top and very ungracious. I would distance myself if I were you.

Never touch anyone‘s thermostat as a guest. So not your place.

My MIL does this. Waits until we go to bed and jacks it up to 75. We keep it below 70 at night. I have hot flashes and my husband sleeps hot. I get so angry. Their house is hideously hot when we visit but I would never touch their thermostat. It’s their house, if they want it to be 77, their prerogative.

you may have overstepped but if they are truly angry their reaction is way out of proportion.

I will only say something at my parents house, not even my in laws. We’re on the 2nd story at my parents and it’s hot, which they don’t always realize.

I would never do it, but their reaction to it is rather odd. If a guest did it I would not care.

As a guest I would remove layers or maybe crack a window in my room for a bit.

Yeah you can't do that. Not appropriate. Open a window a bit instead. I always pack long pjs and shorts the first time I'm staying some where, you just don't know.

Spent the night at a friends house and got hot during the night. Was hot but did not want to wake them. I went and turned the thermostat down 3 degrees and this morning they were angry that I touched their thermostat and turned it down 2 degrees —from 71-68. They said no one who is a guest at someone’s home would turn down the temperature without asking. Nobody. I explained that I did not know it was a problem. Really. If I had known it was a problem I would not have done it. Honestly did not think this would be a problem and tried to tell them this. They told me to take a poll of my friends or anyone to see what they say. I’m posting here to get feedback also. I’m honestly confused and they can’t understand me and I don’t understand them. Feedback please. TIA
