This. May be he was trying to be helpful, may be he is socially awkward, may be he wanted to chat and that’s the first thing that came to his mind... or May be he knew that you’d probably want to get your car cleaned and thought he’d suggest the car wash. You read into it an accusation and an order to get your car cleaned. Now some introspection op, why did you read this into what your neighbor said?

What the heck? He was trying to be helpful since he assumed you’d want to wash your car at some point. Is there a history of you being annoyed by him?

Sounds like your neighbor was trying to be being friendly / helpful, but then it's hard to say for sure without knowing the tone of the conversation.

I would have laughed in his face and asked him if he was planning to pay. Is this neighbor usually a busybody?

I would half be annoyed half laugh it off but I think you were right not to say anything. Good chance the neighbor actually thought he was being helpful.

We just came back from a ski trip, so our car is pretty dirty after a long 5-hr drive. While we were unloading, our neighbor happened to be parking his car too. Then he came over to talk to us and told us about a car-wash place several blocks away. He even said it would be cheaper for a sedan car like ours (because he drove a SUV) and then our car would be shiny again.

I got pretty annoyed by it because it is not his place, but I'm even more upset because I said nothing back other than okay, good to know. My husband doesn't care because he thinks it bothers our neighbor more than us, so we don't need to get upset. Am I too sensitive? We are not even that close with that neighbor. I just need to vent it out.
