Would it be preferable to offer an Airbnb? That would get pricey but doable. We wouldn’t ask her to move everything out of her room, just clear stuff off of surfaces and keep a drawer available for guests.

No way. You give the grandparents your room and you go bunk with the kids. Her room is not a guest room. Or, put the grandparents in the kids room and get the kids a bigger bed.

This. You can't take the room away from an au pair, even for a week.

Give the grandparents your bedroom.

Or for yourself since they’re elderly.

Why don’t the grandparents get an Air BnB or hotel...?

This is a huge no. IF (and this is a huge if, because would have to be completely ok with your au pair) is that you could give her the week off and pay for her to stay somewhere else, like a hotel.
The room stops being a guest room once it becomes your au pair’s room. It sounds like maybe an au pair isn’t for you if you think this is how it works.

I think it’s rude (it’s her only private space in the home, she shouldn’t have to worry about people going through her stuff) but people do it. 6x a year is a lot.

Not reasonable. You can give up your room or grandparents can stay at hotel.

We are looking into an au pair who would take up our only guest room. When grandparents visit, they need to use that room (no other beds big enough for 2 adults, they can’t sleep on the floor etc).
