OP, I hope you took both kids to the fun outing!

I would defenitely have gone. I think the idea of undies under the diaper is a good balance for an outing like this.

I'm also the mom of a SN dc who didn't train till 4.5...then trained in less than a week! All kids are different, and I think your dc will continue to make progress even if an occasional diaper is used.

Agree with the others. Leave for the outing after he has gone in the potty, if possible. Bring two extra pairs of pants, put a towel down on his car seat, bring a travel potty with you if possible. For the first two weeks after doing the first stage of a crap, I put the little stand alone potty in the trunk of the car just in case. Mine was not ready to use the toilet seat insert on a public toilet at that point, but you might have luck. Ask him if he needs to go every 20 minutes, and take him every half hour to sit to try. Explain to your older child that he needs a little extra help right now and you appreciate his patience.

True oh crap devotees would say don’t go. But you have a life to balance. If your son is 5 days in with SN and you’re still on Block 1 I’d say you’re going to be potty training for a while and just put him in a diaper, do the outing, then pick up where you left off. You have a marathon ahead and need to preserve your sanity.

How old is the child? Some are just not ready at the 2 year mark and it might be worthwhile to wait a bit. I tried to potty train my oldest at 2 and it was horrible, but super easy at 2 and a half. I also agree with PP that suggested diapers. If this is about your older kid I wouldn't want the stress of potty training to take away from the experience.

Will you having to tend to younger one and do multiple potty sessions or pants changes impact older child being able to do outing? If so, you might want to use diapers to preserve the event for the older child.

I wouldn't put your child in a diaper, but wait until he pees, then put on loose pants and head out for a shorter excursion.

I would save the longer excursion for another weekend.

+1. We only made it two days at home with our then 22 month old and he wet his pants twice in the park. But then never again. Bring extra pants and go out!

We did Oh Crap when my son was 23 months. We did NOT master “pants at home” before we left the house. We just couldn’t...I needed to leave the house! We kept him pantless at home for a LONG time. I put him in loose pants when we left the house and brought him to the public toilet as soon as we arrived to our destination. We had to clean the car seat a lot but I was done staying home.

Then this is a great opportunity for your child to start connecting urination with wetness. It makes him aware of when he’s releasing urine. Underwear and pants or underwear under pull up today. Take off his pants the second he gets home.

Just let him pee his pants then. NP here and I think he needs to feel the wet. It could help progress potty training.

We spent the last 5 days potty training DS using the Oh Crap method. It’s slow going but we kind of expected that. DS has special needs and seems slow to pick up on it, but he’s making slow progress.

I had arranged for a babysitter to come this morning to stay home with him and literally just watch him and get him to the potty so that I could have an outing with my older child, an outing that was promised days in advance and that she’s really looking forward to.

The babysitter cancelled at the last second.

Am I really ruining everything if I take both kids on the outing? DH is at work. The last week of training was so awful and I’m desperate for a break, but I also don’t want to essentially erase our hard won progress by taking DS out in a diaper for several hours this morning.

How much of a difference will it really make?
