From the NY Times article, it said "Toyota Prius converters fetch a higher price because their gasoline engines aren’t in as much use, and so it can take longer for the car to burn out the precious metals."

Yup. This happened to us in close-in Bethesda. Prius parked on the street. Thieves came and cut it out one night. Cost $1200 to replace.

It's been a "thing" since they came out in the 70s. The platinum is valuable.
