This. Is. Awesome.

That's not what he said at all.

He said that roadways should be designed with all users in mind. He might be talking about safer crossing for pedestrians including wheelchair users, or bike lanes, or improved access for public transportation, or opening up sections of roads for pedestrian and bicycle use the way part of Rock Creek Parkway is used.

He didn't say "interstate highway". He didn't say we would all be using them in the same way.

He needs to stay in his lane (pun intended)

The Sec of Trans job is to focus on interstate and strategic transportation nodes. Highways. Railroads. Aviation. Ports and waterways. Pipelines.

Not making sure every ‘burg in the country has bike lanes.

The job of the Secretary of Tranportation is to focus on transportation. Which includes

-walking
-rolling (e.g., in wheelchairs)
-bicycling

Translation: “our national transportation infrastructure will start deteriorating again (after a four year respite under Trump) and our national highways, bridges, railroads and air and sea ports will start failing as the focus of the DOT becomes painting bike lanes on neighborhood streets.

You're on the wrong side of history, as well as on the wrong side of the facts.

The people should be able to walk/roll/bike places conveniently and without fear of being killed crowd will eat this up. I belong to that crowd. Everyone should.

The people should be able to drive everywhere as fast as possible and then park in front for free crowd won't like it, but who wants to be in that crowd?

Yes, the bike crowd and certainly the turn the streets over to the pedestrians crowd in DC will eat this up. He is speaking to a very small but very vocal group of people (very wealthy by the way).

Anyway, this is all part of the first steps towards limiting vehicle access to urban areas.

It will start with banning ICE vehicles. (Nothing to do with EV's by the way, just a step that everybody agrees with and does not see the slippery slope ahead.)

Then it will move to congestion charging.

Then it will move to an EV plate system where you get access on even or odd days.

Finally it will be emergency vehicles only in the urban centers.

It all sounds great and it is great if you are rich and don't have to commute to a job. But then we never really take second or third order effects into consideration.

So instead, let's focus on making roads more accessible to wheelchairs (deliberate focus by the way because you have the force of law behind you) and high speed rail systems which he is also in love with and will never work. He will have a tenure worth remembering, that is for sure.

I get why he got the position, and he definitely never came across as incredibly deep or an intellectually profound person. This interview was cringey but nothing outside of his past actions. His number one trait is his charm.

That makes it very hard to get anywhere. Basically all you can do is walk around the block (assuming you live on a block).

I realize you were trying to be witty, but you failed.

Isn't the word that he is looking for "sidewalk"?

God is he one of those build everywhere, denser, taller people?

Looks like the Mayor was correct. Streets were made for pedestrians.
