The DCM "scare" has no basis. It was entirely a social media pushed thing...like grain free food was, and still is, too, ironically.

Vets know shockingly little about nutrition and will push whatever the sales reps give them. Look up Dog Food Advisor for reviews and go with foods that don’t have junky fillers. Buy small bags or sample sizes till you find a food that your dog like and agrees with his stomach.
Costco brand is pretty decent. I currently feed mine Solid Gold Leaping Waters but we have done Ziwipeak, Origen, Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo and Acana in the past.

Yeah, I focus on the WSAVA on the label and just don't read the ingredients -- my priority is avoiding DCM.

I really loved going to the shop that sold the fancy stuff, but I didn't want to have a story about how "My dog was gorgeous and healthy until he wasn't."

Breeder recommended Instinct Raw + home made toppers. Our lab is happy, healthy, loving, beautiful and incredibly smart!

We did Life's Abundance because the breeder recommended it, and then switched off to Raw Instinct. We do grain treats but grain-free meals.

Taste of the wild, because that’s what the breeder recommended, and our dog’s parents and grandparents are gorgeous, healthy, champion show dogs.

This. Vets aren't nutritionists, they don't study nutrition much in school.

I tried foods until I found one that worked well for my dog. Shiny coat, less shedding, good skin, and no GI issues. It took 6 or 7 tries, but she's done well on it for years now.
