I have the exact name and nickname for my son. He is now 16 and no daycare or school ever gave me any issue about calling him Jack.

That’s weird but why do you care? Plenty of kids go by one name at home and a different name in school.

I am surprised he even answers to James. I had the reverse issue attempting to keep my Kate (official name) from becoming Katie.

I know someone who removed their child from a daycare that refused to address the child by a nickname. Seems like a ridiculous reason when there are no other issues.

You should have just named your kid Jack if you're going to be so weird about it.

Super weird. My Maggie (legal name Margaret) has been in official state monitored daycare‘s with no problems with her nickname

Never heard of this, in fact our daycare calls our son by his shortened name! Nathaniel is his birth name but we all call him Nate. I would make a stink about this or honestly consider switching daycares.

I love nicknames.

I've heard of this at other daycares. It's a thing.

OP here - none of the OSSE forms have a space for a nickname. Should I re-fill them out and put his nickname in parentheses? All of the daycare's own forms I filled out using his nickname.

A nickname has to be documented on the registration form.

I run a daycare and this is BS.

We recently started our child at daycare, and noticed they were calling him by his "official" name rather than his nickname (John/Jack). I asked the teacher to please call him Jack, and today the director told us they cannot do that due to some confusing explanation of supposed OSSE regulations/what if there's an emergency and the paperwork says John but the teachers call him Jack/if there is a sub (s)he will be confused? This seems crazy to us -- it's his name and we'd like them to use our preferred one -- and the explanations didn't make a ton of sense; not to mention I'm a bit concerned that a sub is coming in and not even being told the kids' names? Before we make a major stink about this, though, wanted to see if others had heard anything like this. Thanks!
