Seconding the idea that trade-ins are probably the best actual deal that doesn't require adding an unneeded line. It's not a "hoop".

It's marketing. You don't come out ahead in a mobile "deal" in the long run. They'll make their money on you. Just buy what you want.

We got a prettty good trade in deal, $500 for an iPhone 7. It took some hoops to get.

I’m on a family plan so each extra line isn’t that much versus paying on my own w a new provider. Why would paying in cash help me get a better deal?

pay cash and then shop for a plan. You'll end up ahead in the long run

Go with another company. Verizon is the most expensive. Don’t get unlimited data - use WiFi when you can.

When I look on an all the tech blogs, they make recommendations but nearly every ‘deal’ they’re touting requires a new line of service. I can’t imagine most people need or want an additional line every time they need a new phone. Any suggestions for how to upgrade my Iphone 8+ or find an actual deal?
