Howard county barely cracks the top 10, with just one school. LOL

US News rankings change literally every year. Both which schools rank in certain spots, and the methodology.

The Maryland Report Card is a much more objective source to use.

Not saying that one school system is better than the other, just that US News rankings are garbage.

Most HS in HoCo are fine. The best are the middle of the socioeconomic road actually...very good neighborhood treasures often overlooked because of the very upscaled moneyed schools. Big mistake to pass these by.

No. It's not, but Western HoCo skews much more conservative.

I wouldn't go to Glenelg in Howard unless you are a Republican or anything but white. Lots of racism issues there.

If you're moving out of DC and want stuff to do on the weekend I would chose Urbana cause you;ll have Frederick close by and restaurants are so cheap there that your money will go far an Urbana HS is phenomenal.

Why? The alternatives are only private or Catholic.

OP here. It boils down to economics for our family. Can we find a public school district that is good ( and not huge) in the surrounding counties and preferably purchase for a million or under or do we stay out and jump in the private school wagon. I don’t think privates are necessarily better which is why we are starting our search for a suburban public school system. There are so many though, that it is really hard to know where to dive into the data.

Honestly it seems odd to me that your choices are either an A+ public school or a private school but you are ruling out anywhere in Bethesda/Chevy chase/Potomac.

I think kids can get a good education in a variety of settings, and I am not saying tons of pressure is good for kids, but where are you zoned for in DC and why do you assume that private would be better than say WJ or BCC?

We live in DC and our DC begins high school in 2 years. We have to decide if we pay the big $ for private and stay living in DC or bite the bullet, sell our SFH and move to the suburbs for an A+ rated public. Both options feel scary. Only one adult would be commuting into DC.

Any ideas which county and area would give us the biggest advantages? We are not interested in a pressure cooker school district ( rules out CC/Bethesda/ Potomac).
