Not the mil if you can afford something else. 40 mins each way and a non professional relationship are both bad

I bring my daughter to my in laws and work there while they care for her then drive home.

1-2x a week they come to us and watch her here while I work.

Wow! Pandemic. Where will you get a nanny who is not associating with others?

Nanny. MIL can do care on weekends as needed and cover for nanny when she is on leave.

Also, MIL thinks she remembers babies. But they are relentless, and she might not be fully remembering that.

Don’t turn the grandma into the nanny! I’m amazed at the families that do this.

Yes, you should get a nanny. Get a good nanny who knows about engaging infants and can help you set a good routine. Plus you’ll get help with all child-related chores like baby’s laundry, linen, sorting and packing away too small clothes, fresh purées, sterilizing bottles and toys. The baby will sleep in his/her own bed.

And the mother-role won’t be confused by the grandmother.

If cost is not a big consideration, I also vote for the nanny. it will help preserve a good relationship with MIL.

Nanny. 40 minutes, four times a day is over 2 1/2 hours of driving every day.

Nanny all the way if you can afford it. Saves the commute, time to pack things up, ability to see your kid if you have breaks during the day and most importantly you’re her employer and can be in charge instead of trying to negotiate with your mil

Would your mother-in-law be willing to do drop off in the afternoon/evening some of the time? Perhaps bring baby home and eat dinner with you all 2x a week? (I know this is asking a lot of someone already willing to watch your child for free) That would maybe make it more doable with the 40 minute commute. If not, and if I could afford it, I would get a nanny for at least part-time. 40 minutes is too long a drive for childcare. You'll spend 80 minutes in the car round-trip in the morning and evening. That's A LOT!

Do you really want to drive an hour and a half every day?! That sounds miserable. I’d get a nanny. If MIL wanted to do one day a week that could be nice for you and give you more flexibility with scheduling the nanny. But I would not want to commute 40 minutes each way to childcare, this totally negating the advantage of teleworking in terms of work-life balance.
