Our school had to get permission for a zoom read through of the 6th grade play that had the live performance canceled the week before the show. We did not record it- just invited parents and staff to log on with the performers to see the shower remote..

OP here.
This is great info, thanks.
I do agree that a YouTube upload may not fly here. But I am hoping that a video montage (of students' taped performances) could work if we 'stream' it on a platform other than YouTube or something like this.

You are smart to think about this. I’m an attorney but not a copyright lawyer so hopefully someone else will weigh in with expertise, but I would think “fair use” applies here. Your post reminded me of this crazy situation where Disney tried to fine a PTA for showing The Lion King during a fundraiser last year. They backed off after a public outcry.

I am a parent volunteer trying to clarify our public school system's ability to allow a video recording (and rebroadcast) of a virtual talent show, which would potentially include copyrighted music.
Kids often perform dance routines, sing, etc. to copyrighted music; and in years' past, this was allowed at a live performance in the school with no ticket sales, no filming and broadcasting, etc. But a virtual production would expressly be video taping said music and I worry about copyright rules.

Can anyone advise?
I am not a copyright law attorney, so some of this 'fair use' language is a little lost on me.
My school (elementary) is somewhat sticking their head in the said, althought they have given me permission to do the talent show. I've reached out to the FCPS PTA organization but in the meantime...

Can some of you awesome DCUM lawyers help?
