I’ve never had them trimmed there. I Dremel myself. Vet was fully aware of that and said I needed to do it more often. So it wasn’t about money.
They DO catch and the whole nail gets ripped out. Not fun. Saw it happen to a friends dog.

If the puppy didn't say anything I doubt she really hit it. Maybe she just put ointment on because you were watching her and clearly thought something was wrong.

We walk her 5-6 miles a day and her nails definitely still need trimming regularly.

Not normal if it happens frequently - very normal as a once in a while.

OP here. It was on the dew claws, so not nails that touch the ground. This is the first I’ve watched as the other trims have been at the vets or I was sent to a register to pay while it was done. Puppy jerked her leg a little which was only sign it happened. Groomer then took a look and put on ointment. Her nails are black and I’ve thought of attempting to trim them myself but have always been afraid of accidentally hitting the quick. It had been three weeks since her last trim, which was at the vet.

Our groomer has never hit the quick on our dog’s black nails. Twice! Poor puppy. Were you there when it happened?

+1 Black nails are so difficult. How frequently are you having them done, OP? If they got long over a few weeks, the quick may have moved out toward the tip. More frequent trims and walks on hard surfaces will help the quick to recede.

I've started doing my 6 year old black lab's nails since covid started and I'm just now to the point of feeling confident - and that is with me doing little micro trims every single week.

Some puppy Nails, especially if they’re the black ones, are harder to tell where the quicks are. Groomers are human too so If you feel comfortable with everything else they are doing then I wouldn’t worry about it. Now if that happened every time you went that would be a different story.

The groomer hit the quick twice trimming my puppy’s nails. The puppy was calm so it wasn’t a case of not being able to keep her still. Is that a normal occurrence or should we be finding a new place to go? Groomer said it was normal. I didn’t see any blood and they put an ointment on after.
