There are hybrids, and there are plug-in hybrids. They mostly operate the same, using a mix of electric power and a gasoline engine to move the car. The plug-in hybrids have much larger batteries in order to use the electric capacity from the time plugged in to drive you a certain number of miles in purely electric mode before the gasoline engine needs to kick on.

It will of course "work" if you never plug it in, but it's a waste of money to buy all that extra battery capacity if you're not going to plug it in.

This is a good question because not everyone can have a plug in station at their home.

Well its called a plug in hybrid, so yes, it needs to be plugged in. It’s a shame it’s not all over the Volvo site since, they make it. If it was only spelled out many times on the main page of the manufacturers site....

I assume it’s like the prius in that it would work, and get decent gas mileage, if you never plugged it in, but if you want to use the electric-only range then you’d need to plug it in

As a Prius owner, I like having a hybrid but don’t have a driveway/ garage so can’t buy a vehicle that requires plug in.

Can the Volvo recharge be used as a hybrid that charges while driving alone like the Prius?
