Nothing worse than being cold and uncomfortable. You don't want to be thinking about how cold you are and how much your feet hurt. If you're comfortable and warm, your personality will be able to shine through.
Actually better to layer than have a really warm coat (unless it's really cold out or you're going to walk REALLY slow). For a day like today, I'd wear a t-shirt, a baselayer like a long-sleeve Merino shirt, then a shell or light jacket like this:
