Take over someone else's lease with ~12 months remaining on a site like Swapalease.

Not sure if the OP is going to have much success finding a 1 year lease.

How about a
Chevy spark? Those things are really tiny and really cheap.

A new 2021 Corolla LE should be around $18k all-in with VA 6% tax.

What? No.

Then I’m stuck owning a car for longer than I want to, and I have to pay higher taxes on it because it’s worth more. Bad take.

You can sell it and basically drive it for free.

This is the extremely rare situation in which it might be worth leasing.

Try a used Toyota Yaris or a Mazda3 - cheaper than a Corolla or Civic, and extremely reliable. They are great "Point A to Point B" cars.

Try biking. You can get around almost anywhere you need to go, and get exercise while doing it. Plus, you’re not killing the planet.

This, but like: really used. 8 years old, not 2-3 years old. The value over the course of a year to 18 months will barely budge and it will be reliable, cheap, low taxes, nobody will carjack you, the benefits are endless!

We share a newer model CR-V, but DH’s boss is going to start making him come in 5 days a week. He used to take metro, but that doesn’t feel safe right now, and I don’t want to be trapped at home without a car every single weekday, and he doesn’t get home until 6:30.

I don’t think we need an extra car long term, just until things get back to normal. We live in VA, so I don’t want something too expensive where I’ll get hit with a massive property tax bill. I think we will likely sell it after we can take metro again because we live in Old Town and I don’t think we need two cars here, so I am not interested in buying new.

Ideas?
