There is no reason to worry about it being stolen. I inherited one, and in checking with a friend who owns an auction business, found there is no market for fur coats.

If it has deep sentimental value then you will be worrying about it the whole time it is in coat check, which is not worth dealing with.

But really, things don't get stolen out of coat check very often and I wouldn't expect fur to be stolen more than anything else. So few people wear it, who would buy it from the thief? I also would not worry about someone tossing paint on you or the like: people are as likely to assume it's fake or vintage, as to assume it's real.

There are cold weather situations where fur is defensible. Ethically I am not comfortable with mink or fox for fashion: I eat meat and use leather but nobody is eating those fur-bearing critters after they're killed. And they are farmed in awful conditions. Bison, seal, rabbit, etc is more likely to have lived well and more likely to have been consumed.

If you're at a place fancy enough for a coat check, then yes I'd give it. Especially if you get a ticket when you drop it off. Random bar/club "coat checks"- no! I've had coats stolen from coat checks at clubs here in DC, so I always wear crappy ones when I know it might happen.

Not sure what that pp is talking about it being rare. I have several mink and a white fox shrug. I like vintage clothing (and I'm fashionable unlike the person saying they're out of style) and they fit me. No I don't give them to coat check, but mine are small jackets or shrugs, not the long coats. Typically I wear them to holiday parties or outdoor cocktail parties where it's cold and my dress needs a jacket.

I wouldn’t wear it in DC, but furs were more common when I lived in Chicago where it gets much colder.

I have several I inherited from my mom and grandmothers. I wear them. I have only left at a coat check once and it was fine. I am not someone who lives my life overly concerned with what strangers on the street think so looks and comments wouldn't bother me.

I wear the mink I inherited from my mother, which was a jacket that I remodeled into a vest. It's warm, I love it, but no, I never give it to be checked.

Real mink and fur is so rare that I doubt many people would give it a second glance, so, yes, I'd wear it if it were my style and leave it at the coat check.

I would wear an inherited fur if I lived in a cold climate. I would not leave it in a coat check and I would be afraid of hate. I would not buy a new fur coat and contribute to the fur industry.

It's kind of silly to eat animals but refuse to wear fur IMHO. Wear leather shoes, belts, purses. Use products tested on animals. Heck even pharmaceuticals heavily involve animal testing. And I do animal rescue.

I inherited a mink coat from a relative. I would like to wear it when it's very cold or for certain occasions. However, I don't want to get "hate" comments or looks. I also don't think I would feel comfortable leaving it at a coat check because it could easily get taken.
