District taxpayers continue to pay out the a55 in police settlements because MPD is completely and totally out of control. Beating the snot out of innocent people in broad daylight. Happens all the time.
The brutalization of innocent people is heartbreaking but because they happen almost exclusively to non white people, it gets swept under the rug.
Thank you Councilmember Allen for performing oversight of MPD and standing up for DC residents and taxpayers.
The settlements are businesses decisions, not legal decisions. From a purely financial perspective, it’s better for the taxpayers to foot an unjustifiable $1M settlement than for the community to suffer a $100m in riot damages and police overtime.

There will be no changes so long as they are free to hand out taxpayer money as settlement with zero accountability and no admission of guilt.
While I like the idea, what would happen in situations like the Michael Brown incident? The police officer was 100% justified in his use of force, yet the city gave 1 million bucks to his parents.
why do you think the use of force was justified? it was excessive. police don’t get to execute anyone they want, even if they are resisting or aggressive.
Aggressive enough, then the police have the right to defend themselves.
not any more right than the general public. I don’t get to kill someone because I feel scared. Also, police need to be trained in de-escalation not “shoot as soon as you feel nervous.”

Maybe you need to de-escalate? No one in these settlements was shot.

No they are not. The DC council and criminals are out of control.
