Oh Crap says to take them once and then tell them they need to hold it until morning. They are wearing a nighttime diaper, so they don’t really need to hold it, but It makes it not a game anymore. I don’t follow this advice but there it is.

I make the potty trip as boring and dimly lit as possible. He’s just two so he still wears a sleep sack to bed so I carry him to the dimly lit bathroom and put him on the potty. I engage very little reminding him it’s bedtime. When he’s finished, the sleep sack goes back on before we leave the bathroom.

Start bedtime routine 15 minutes earlier to compensate. Then you’re not stressed about it.

My two-year-old does this. If she’s stalling I tell her “ If you need to pee, you need to pee now so we can go upstairs for a bath. We won’t have enough time for a story tonight if you keep sitting here if you don’t have to go.” The idea of possibly going to bed without a story is enough for her to make a pee or hop off.

Don’t make a big deal out of it and make him do it alone without your help.

Incorporate sitting on the toilet for 5 minutes into the bedtime routine. Might have to be literally the last thing before bed. If he tells you he's done then literally 2 minutes later when he sees the bed has to go again, take him back to the toilet, sit him there without saying anything preferably in a boring bathroom (maybe even lights off with nothing but a nightlight). Let him sit there 5, 10, 15 minutes till he gets bored and he realizes he's not going to get a reaction out of you with his new trick and sitting on the toilet is boring. If he starts screwing around potty time is done. Redress him and bring him to bed.

Let him go the bathroom and use a small potty alone. Not much excitement there.

Lately, he's been using the "Need to go POTTY." excuse as a way to stall going to bed. Sometimes, he will legitimately go--other times not.

Any suggestions on how to approach this? Thanks!!

Just know that this will pass. He wont be like this forever.

+1 this.

We dealt with this with one of mine, it didn't last.

Also forgot to say, if he's still in diapers... then don't worry about it! Give him a chance to go on the potty before he's diapered for the night, but after that I wouldn't stress. He'll be fine til morning.
