Then OP should be picketing outside her local adult gym and restaurants, b/c that's certainly much more a cause for concern. Our kids aren't in school with no school anywhere in sight, so the very low risk of sports participation is worth it for my kids mental health. She can make different choices. Northam is allowing an exception for masks for exercise and the rec league plans are all within his guidelines.

This is a generous spin, but not what the OP posted. She said she’s concerned for people coming in the building on Monday. It’s a bit crazy.

They tested cruise ships days after people left and covid was found on surfaces so it's not absurd but why complain here. Complain to the rec league and if they ignore you take it to FCPS.

There's no evidence that anyone has been sick from surface transmission, especially not days later. That's ridiculous.

FCPS property is permitted for "community use" at times when the school doesn't need it for school acitvities, since its public property. Adult leagues also receive permits for the gyms and fields. The community use is supervised by Fairfax County, not fCPS. So FCPS rules don't apply to permit-holders, and vice versa. Two completely separate entities.

Why is so OP so concerned about what other people are doing, if it doesn't affect her? Obviously she wouldn't sign her kids up to play and if Covid floats thru the air for days, she's not sending her kids to school or working in person either so....I don't get where she is a stakeholder here.

I volunteer for one of the rec leagues and we were assured by Fairfax County that the permits scheduled to start in January won’t get yanked. Everyone is expecting the case numbers to go down with the vaccinations starting. We are requiring all adults to be masked, one spectator per player, no parents during practices, but not requiring masks on the kids. This complies with Virginia regulations.

I haven’t been to a private gym all year-does Fairfax require adults to be masked at all times while working out?

I don’t see the issue. I’m not sure it’s safe for kids to wear masks playing basketball. Seems like it could be a safety hazard with obstructed vision, tripping, falling etc.

You think that covid germs from a weekend game will float around and infect people in the school building on Monday? That’s your issue?

As long as the adults all have masks and they are limiting the number of spectators then I think that sounds reasonable. People aren’t required to wear a mask when they work out. It’s an optional activity so if you aren’t comfortable with it, don’t do it.

Rec Leagues in this area are going forward with indoor basketball but unlike FCPS they're not requiring that kids wear masks during practices and games. I know VHSL says it is up to leagues but if FCPS is requiring it and rec leagues are using FCPS gyms, shouldn't the rec leagues require it. Or shouldn't FCPS say if you want to use our gyms you must wear masks during practice and games? It's airborne. Doesn't it put FCPS staff and students (some are there) at risk who show up on Monday when basketball games were played in the building maskless????
