The current location is pretty close to the geographic center of the City.
For those in Old Town, Del Ray, Rosemont, etc, the new location adds significant travel time. Going via the Beltway and 395 instead of King or Braddock would help, but not if the Beltway or 395 are clogged. For many of them, it would make it as fast or faster to go to Virginia Hospital Center. Unfortunately, in an emergency, I suspect that AFD would take them to the new Inova rather than VHC even if VHC were closer/faster.
Having an elderly parent who lives in Old Town, I have mixed feelings about this announcement.

That is not a desirable site for dense retail and residential. It's surrounded by highways without any decent public transit. It will never be a destination. That's why it's been stagnant for decades.
It’s not great to have a major employment center like a hospital in a place without public transit, though?
Anonymous wrote:A hospital instead of a shitty mall no one has gone to in 15 years....hummmm let me think about that. And that area has more than enough low income apts so that isn't a need, what would be a better use? Another tacky mall or apts with 1st floor applebees
