Ha! My DS scored under 1000 on the PSAT because he said he got bored and started filling in the ovals randomly also . His schools are all test optional this year, and because of ADHD he would qualify for the accommodation that would allow him to take the ACT over 4 days -- and it's hard to find a location for these accommodations now-- so he opted not to take either the ACT or SAT. He just got his first EA acceptance at a school he really likes, so fortunately all good. But yes, hard to believe how idiotic my supposedly bright DS can be, I completely emphasize!

I'd be made at my kid for doing this too, for a variety of reasons, but I think it will be fine. With such weird scores, to the extent that the committee looks at them rather than super scoring, they will assume that he did mostly what he did -- not try on half the test/prepare for only half the test. On the margins, not as impressive to me as someone who easily gets a 35/36 (one of the reasons I'd be mad at my brilliant son, for putting his brilliance in doubt), but not the end of the world. It's funny, I'm getting at my kid just writing this, for all those times he didn't use up all the time he had in a math competition, and then didn't catch some simple error because he didn't bother to redo the problem. But boy do I love him and think he's awesome.

Thanks! I’m just venting. He got into his safety (ASU) already, so I’m not too freaked. It’s just we’ve scrambled to get these tests done, and then he does something boneheaded like that. Boys!

OP I love your honest post. Unfortunately frontal lobes on boys aren’t developed until much later.. I’m so sorry but as a parent I chuckle thinking this might be my son one day.

I think it’s funny too.

from the UVA admissions website. I believe this means yes they will see all of the scores, but they will recalculate it.
For applicants submitting test scores, has been the Office of Admission’s long-standing policy to consider the best test scores submitted by applicants. We use the top score from each SAT section across all administrations of the same exam. We hope you will submit all of your scores knowing that we will recombine the sections to get the best possible set of scores. If reporting an ACT score, report the composite and sub-scores as they appear on your official score report without any recalculation.

My lovely, brilliant IDIOT Of a child got his ACT scores this morning. He took the test in September and got a 32. He got 36 in reading. Science was the low score with a 24. He took it again on 12/12 and only got a 29. He got a 33 in science this time, but only got a 16 in reading. What happened?

He filled in the ovals randomly! "I didn't really bother trying on that section because I got a 36 last time and I don't need it for the superscore." Aaaaaagh! Not all schools superscore! You freaking idiot! UVA doesn't superscore! Aaaaaagh! You could have had a 34 or 35 composite without superscoring. Aaaaaagh! I am so mad!
