5. That's when she could wash it, dry it and comb it on her own. She also knew how to braid it and put it in a pony tail or pigtails if she needed to. I still braid it or style it once in a while when she asks me to. We're Asian. DD2 has typical long, thick (and lots of it) straight hair. It's easy for her to manage. DD1 couldn't manage her hair well. Exact same type of hair as DD2, but since she still needed help brushing it and shampooing I cut off 8 inches so it would be a lot easier for her to manage on her own at 9 YO because at that point she really should have been able to manage it on her own and she wasn't able to at the long length it was. After cutting g it to the middle of her back, it was a lot easier for her to handle it on her own.

Just curious, why would you let to grow so long that she is unable to take care of it herself?

Mine was able to brush hers and wash/condition herself at 8. But it wasn't super long, maybe a couple inches past shoulders.

I think keeping it at a length they can manage themselves is best- for everyone, including their hair!

Until middle school. My DD is also black/white and has 2b/3a curls. I wanted her hair in braids or twists for school. In 6th grade, she wanted it down. There was a lot of friction damage and it only started to regain length during the quarantine.

Still bushing my almost 11 yo’s hair. Still trying to convince her that her pandemic hair needs several inches cut.

I let my 7 yo brush and style hers most mornings, sometimes I step in to help or re-do. I also braid it for her after a shower: if she sleeps in braids it's pretty manageable the next day.

I had my parents french braid mine through high school, because I never learned to french braid my own (can do others). When I moved out I switched to other styles, and eventually got it cut.

Still do my 10 year olds.

My five year old often needs to be reminded but she brushes her hair herself every morning and before bed. I strongly prefer her hair in ponytails, braids or a bun but she prefers to wear it down and as long as she brushes it I don’t fight that battle.

My daughter is still 8 and I do it. Her hair is very long and post shower brushing properly without hair damage would be a lot more challenging for her to do alone.

How old were your daughters when you stopped doing their hair for them, brushing their hair for them after they shower, etc?
