Their actual complaint bears this out. That's a LOT of talk about the failings of virtual learning which are irrelevant to the question of whether the SMOB is a constitutionally allowed to vote. The actual relevant arguments are given a pretty short treatment by contrast. My instincts tell me that when an attorney tries to make a case about something other than the legal question presented, they're trying to paper over a weak case, but we'll see.

Op here. What’s factually incorrect? Students vote now on School Boards in Maryland and their votes have meaning for society. Okay so sorry for not realizing only in wacky MoCo do they get to vote on a 3 billion dollar budget when they make 11 bucks an hour in the summer as a lifeguard. (All noble work - just don’t think mature enough to realize they are being played by talented adults). I also agree with you on the one 80 year old member of MoCo board - but she keeps winning the Apple Ballot/Downcounty vote fair and square - and she can legally vote in our society.

I’m a HoCo parent and I think the smob should have a vote. I think students ought to have representation, and the kid who is voted in to serve is typically wicked smaht and more mature than his/her peers.

But honestly, why do we have an even-numbered board? Very impractical.

I would say elderly folks shouldn't be able to run for office or vote. They're not going to have to deal with the consequences of their actions, so they have little reason to act in the community's interest.

And it's not like 70+ year olds are really all-there cognitively.

I'd say drop the voting age to 16 and make 65 the max voting age

Utterly crazy a 17 year old has full power to vote on a 3 billion dollar budget. Never held more than part time job. Can’t vote in an election. Not fully developed cognitively. Basically, they just become captured by the savviest adult on the Board - and they double the adult’s voting power. Good on these parents.
