I've watched the U13B SYC vs Bethesda (Bethesda won 1-0) and SYC vs Armour (SYC won 2-1) games and ECNL doesn't even compare. Definitely will have my kid tryout with some MLSNext clubs for 2020-2021 season.

For U14s as well 100% agree. ECNL...McLean, Loudoun, BRYC, Richmond...don't even compare to Alexandria, Springfield, Bethesda, Achilles, I'm not sure where Arlington fits. They are doing well in ECNL but not sure if they are at MLS Next Level.

Loudoun is in ECNL by inertia and size. Their a shit club by any tangible metric.

Well DC United must think somewhat highly of Loudoun because Loudoun is part of their P2P program with only 5 other clubs.

they have nice facilities and if a real feeder league ever develops (the kind with paying fans and players under contract), Loudon is the natural fit in the area (minus Loudon soccer club)

Not a rule for every age or gender, but a majority based on what I have seen tells me it depends.

Boys - MLSNext > ECNL

Girls - ECNL > GA

I think MLSNext will expand and take over more of the better boys clubs/teams and ECNL will be supreme for girls. Who really knows though. In my experience, a better team, club, coach fit is more important than the patch. Most of the higher level leagues are good recruiting platforms and if your kid is on a team that is a good fit they will shine with coaches.

There was talk in one of the previous threads of Arlington putting their Academy (former DA) team in MLSNext and placing their Red team into their ECNL slot.

Which is the better league ECNL or MLS Next and why?

Today? ECNL because it is an actual league that has structure, plays games, and has a track record. Today MLS Next is still an idea. To be fair, an idea with more specifics around it than when it started but still an idea. If it gets up and running in a professional manner, all bets are off and I think there will be movement. But that is not 2020-2021 and we will have to see if it is 2021-2022.

My bet, if I were putting a small or modest bet on it, would be no. In another couple of years, maybe.

The better talent is in MLSNext. It is not even close. It is a league and is functioning well. The non-MLS Academy clubs in MLS Next are comparable to the ECNL clubs. But the MLS academies are the differentiator. See earlier post. As we said, if you are not at the MLS academies or core MLS Next teams like Bethesda or Armour, this question doesn’t matter because the rest of the teams are comparable.

Or stay in a 2nd rate league and dominate only to know they aren't playing the best competition? I think MLSNext will eventually win out and the DA Teams that joined ECNL will leave to MLSNext.

Thoughts?

I don’t think the premise is accurate. Some clubs did not join ECNL (like Bethesda). I think MLSNext is likely to remain better simply because the MLS academies and charter member U15U17 clubs like Bethesda will attract the top talent in the area. But it could obviously vary across regions. The question is where you should play if you are not on an MLS academy team. Probably does not matter much.

Totally agree, with your last statement. So that's why I believe the players on the DA Teams that joined ECNL will leave to MLSNext teams leaving ECNL with less competitive teams.

I recall the time, when all these clubs, except DCU, were in NCSL and competed against each other and the cost was about $1000 or less. Today we have the same coaches, same clubs, just multiple leagues with a much higher price tag and longer travel times.

Biased premise, won’t take seriously.
