There are many more other options than specialized high schools also. Do your research!

Definitely! I am moving from Brooklyn to DC and I think it is going to be much more challenging to find a school for my child. I have worked in the New York Public School System for the past 20 years. There are some excellent options in NYC.
Do you research on www.insideschools.org
In NYC unlike DC you do not have to depend on a lottery. If you find a school middle school you like you can apply but you can also follow up and if the school has space they can take your child no matter where you live in NYC.
We live in Flatbush Brooklyn and my daughter attends a school in Park Slope 85 percent of students are on or above level.

Middle school starts in 6th grade in NYC. It might be harder to get into in 7th. It's all a lottery as of this year. If you can afford private, it can be very good (BASIS Brooklyn is excellent! and cheaper than some others). High schools are good, since there is still the SHSAT test, you have to start studying in 7th grade for it. My kid is in one of top Middle Schools in District 2 (Manhattan) and they didn't handle DL very well at all....

No. No effing way. We are trying to get out of NYC to be in MD.

NYPS for middle schools is going to be lottery and they might eventually get rid of specialized high school entrance exam, all in the name of desegregation. They take the wrong approach to level the playing field. So they are dumbing it down for everyone.

It is chicken and egg though - you have to be resident before you can apply to those specialized programs.

It depends. Does the kid test well? How ambitious are they and how resilient?

Would you bring a kid into NYPS from out of state for 7th through high school if you had a choice?
