My kid majored in Global Liberal Studies, which has the same curriculum as the Liberal Studies core in the first two years. I think the program is a gem. Students get the benefit of small seminar-style classes at a big university, even in their freshman year. The profs are fantastic, and I was impressed with the kinds of things my kid was reading and writing. (She already had a good foundation in the humanities, and these classes stretched her.) The core does have a different cohort than the full major--they do not mix the cohorts--so I can't speak to the peer group. I do think the core program gets a bad rap because most kids don't choose it--they're often placed there when they don't get into their chosen major. They can transfer to whatever major they like after the first two years, though, so the end result is the same.

My kid was a music performance major at Steinhardt and did the liberal arts core. It was spread out over the whole degree, a couple of courses at a time. My son is a math/science kid and found the math/science options easy and the English ones pretty challenging.

If your student did the “liberal arts core” what can you tell us about it? What did they go on to major in?
