It’s really hard to roll in the Merlin. It says not to use it if your child can roll IN the suit, not if they can roll at all.

This. When our DD could roll over, she still couldn't roll in the merlin.

Having said that, we used the merlin from 4 - 7 months, so at 6 months you might just want to switch to a sleep sack. First night will be rough but after that it's fine.

Also recommend zipadee zip!! It’s a great transition between a swaddle and a sleep sack. I was skeptical, but it worked for us!

We just put her in a sleep sack. First night was hard but after that she adjusted quickly.

At 6 months, his startle reflex should be gone so it's probably just a matter of letting him get used to his hands. I think you should go cold turkey to a regular sleep sack and just brace yourself for a couple of rough days until he gets used to it. Otherwise, you just have another transition down the road. Zippadee Zip is probably your best bet of the suggestions for something that may ease the transition and won't require a near-term new transition since they can roll in them safely.

Another recommendation for the merlin sleep suit. My child was also a glorious sleeper when swaddled and when we had to transition out it was a couple rough nights until I got one of those. It really did the trick. She went back to sleeping like she always had. Used it for a couple months and then transitioned to a sleep sack without problem.

6 months is a really long time to be swaddled. I would just try cold turkey and give it a few days.

Mine loved the merlin suit too, but it might not last long if he’s rolling. He’ll roll over and get stuck on his front and be very unhappy.

After the Merlin suit we switched to a nested bean sleep sack (it’s backward because he likes sleeping on his tummy). I don’t know if the weight of the bean does anything, but he seems to like it.

Try Zipadee Zip or Swaddle Up sleep sacks. There are probably other similar ones out there...you may just have to try a few different ones until you find one that works. I had one kid that liked the Zipadee Zip and another that liked the Swaddle Up.

Our baby has been swaddled to sleep happily 6 beautiful months (our pediatrician said that was fine until he was rolling over) .... sure enough today during his nap he rolled over. I’ve been trying to get him to sleep with his arms out and NO luck. Cried his entire afternoon nap. Which is not normal for him - normally a champion sleeper. Am I just bracing myself for a rough few days of no sleep, or any tips or recommendations?

Thank you!
