We already know how to prevent this, Congress, our leaders, and the NIMBY brigade simply don't have the will to do anything about it.

Legalize all drugs
Equally distribute Section 8, Inclusionary Zoning, homeless shelters, halfway houses, and all other subsidized units in all wards of the city
Stop incarcerating people for nonviolent crimes and instead sentence them to mandatory employment at a living wage performing city services such as picking up litter
Eliminate single family zoning
Provide financial incentives for parents of students performing at or above grade level in school
Increase funding for UDC and prioritize hiring that will put it on par with UMD/UVA
Legislate minimum 3 weeks paid leave for all employees working in DC.
End the revolving door prison system for violent offenders
Free childcare for residents under a certain income threshold
Free detox/rehab for anyone convicted of crimes involving hard drugs
Tie minimum wage to inflation and median housing costs

Violence happens because idle, uneducated people compete for resources. People become idle and uneducated because their parents aren't involved in their life and education. Parents aren't involved in their life and education because they can't afford to, because they weren't educated, because they are addicted to drugs, etc. Fixing this issue requires a holistic approach that will be extremely expensive and take generations to fully realize, but there's no other way. Sadly this will never happen but hey, maybe instead we'll just push all the poor people to PG county and they won't be our problem anymore!

That's a wonderful list, PP.

Can we do this with section 8, homeless and anyone receiving a govt. handout who is able bodied and not otherwise employed or in training or school? There is a separate thread about litter by the highway.

Like England? Come on, PP.

The US consistently has more knife attacks than the UK.

I think the US is associated with gun violence and peoole done tealize how many stabbings we have. Its a problem. Yes, like England.

Stabbings are only fatal in extremely rare circumstances. Gunshots are usually lethal.

Go F yourself gun nutter.

Just permanent long term injuries. Perfectly fine.

Other than the SFH silliness, this seems like a pretty good list. I'd also add "stand up the ACLU and bring back institutionalization for mentally ill persons who cannot care for themselves". There are a lot of folks on the street that need long-term care, and cannot be depended on to take their meds or seek help on their own.

H street definitely has more homeless people hanging around.

Just walked through this. I know this stuff happens in the city, but it's so alarming to see it in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon, on a busy intersection in my neighborhood. I saw the blood in the bus stop and knew it was a stabbing before I found it online. I know the corner of H St & 8th well and there's every likelihood the victim is housing insecure or struggling in some other way. I hope the victim is okay.
