The book about puberty that I gave my DD has a section about gifts girls might get for their first period, including a pearl necklace or (I kid you not) a dinner out with Dad. Just no, I can’t believe this is a thing.

OP, get her some basic supplies and yourself a case of wine and a few boxes of tissues, cause it’s about to get hard(er).

Something like this is a great idea. Tell her about it beforehand, like now, and then it will be there when her period comes/ when she needs it. My Mom left some things for me under the bathroom cabinet, and when I got my first period, it was so awesome and thoughtful that she had put these things there for me.

Supplies + period underwear ready and waiting. You can stock and tell her about it now.

This. The best gift my mother gave me was a full box of Kotex under the sink and a nonchalant attitude when I told her.

+1. My MIL sent my DD red earrings and my DD still makes fun of this gift 5 years later.

That’s too weird, OP. She may not see it the way you do. It’s personal. Your gift should be you being there for her and talking to her, reassuring her, but not making a huge deal of it.

Her getting her period is not horrible, scary, shameful time (why in the heck would you say, "shameful"? What a weird, weird thing to say. What is "horrible" is your gift idea.

What about renting a fun movie or yes, a game. I wouldn't make it jewelry or clothing or A Thing that would be an awkward reminder.

Looking for a gift to get my daughter for her first period. I want it to be a special celebratory moment for her and not a horrible, scary, shameful time. She's 12 and it can come tomorrow or in 2-3 years. It wouldn't hurt to have a gift just ready and waiting. Any ideas? Her interests are video games. LOL! So nothing related to what she likes is very helpful.
