I’m talking about my specific issues with Hogan. Graft should not be accepted by any politician, Republican or Democrat. This tolerance for this behavior is why Maryland has so many issues with corruption.

I like him better than the last Republican gov, Bob Ehrlich, but I'm not really enthusiastic about Larry Hogan either. I'm from/am more rooted in Baltimore rather than DMV, so I imagine my likes and dislikes of the guy are going to be a little different.

On one hand, it was incredibly petty and expensive for him to cut the Red Line after the 2015 unrest... But on the other, there was levelheaded local opposition to it that the "white butterfly"-dwelling liberals ignored or dismissed. In general, on the broad issue of the hellhole that is Baltimore, he's been no different than most governors. O'Malley was the last one who gave a hoot, but only because his political success was rooted in putting a dent in the city's horrendous problems... Other than that, Hogan's been no different. Punish the city leadership when something really awful happens, but otherwise, kick the can down the road.

Hogan's handling of the virus hasn't really blown me away. It's great this state was one of the first to respond to it, but the stunt with the tests being flown directly from Seoul or wherever, eh. I also roll my eyes when he does his whole "standing up to Trump as a Principled Republican" business.

The Democrats here need to put up guys who aren't empty suits like Anthony Brown or Ben Jealous. Larry Hogan ran on a platform that didn't seem to completely revolve around universal pre-k, so he was able to get my vote just for having slightly more depth on state issues.

+1. I haven't loved everything Hogan has done (although claims that he is a mini-Trump and the like seems off base to me), but I have no regrets choosing him over Jealous. We will see whether a reasonably moderate Dem can make it through the primary, although I guess you could say the same about the Republicans.

I'm probably most likely to vote for whichever side picks someone closer to the center.

I might support R if the choices are Boyd Rutherford vs Marc Elrich. Or I might just leave it blank. Otherwise, never again. Republicans are too far gone.

Is the candidate a country club/Rockefeller Republican of a Trump Republican. I’ll vote for one over a progressive democrat, but would vote progressive over the other

It would depend on a lot of things. Is Jealous running again? Or is the Dem candidate otherwise a “Justice Dem” type who believes in Magical Monetary Theory? Is the new Republican candidate a straight shooter? What did he say about Trump during the Trump years? Any whiff of corruption/self dealing from either candidate?

Also maybe this is idiosyncratic but I really liked that, for a Republican, Hogan had solid support with black people and my black friends and acquaintances thought well of him. I’m white and I know I can sometimes miss dog whistles, but knowing they didn’t think he was a bad guy was sort of a permission slip to support Hogan.

If you’re a moderate Dem who voted for Hogan, are there other Republicans you’d consider voting for in 2022, or was Hogan a rare exception for you? Or does it depend on other things, like how bad the Democratic nominee is? Are there certain specific Republicans you would support over certain specific Democrats?
