It's definitely both. I have six and some kids naturally are excellently behaved 95 percent of the time and all they need is "Larlo" with a Look. Some other kids need a talk before we walk in about the behavior expected and a few pulls to the side with whispered instructions.

Well-behaved and polite is all nurture. Couldn’t be anything else. Good-natured is both a stable, supportive home and the child’s basic genetic disposition.


But even the best kids misbehave at home.

This. Assholes have asshole kids. Doormats also have asshole kids. Kind parents with rules and boundaries for their kids have kids who behave in general. Nature is only an issue if it’s like to the level of a mental health issue. Otherwise kids should be well-behaved and polite... mine are when they leave the house at least

Both. My kid is basically good natured, but the good behavior and manners came from years of good parenting. We set rules and boundaries and created healthy routines, but we pick our battles.

This, but I would add by parents who set boundaries, established rules with consequences. These things are not mutually exclusive.

Both. Without nurture, naturally good kids can do bad things. Despite tons of good nurture, some kids are simply wired for aggression or high maintenance personalities.

It's never as simple as we want it to be.
