She recently moved up to 14, which looks like it's halfway through 3rd. So about a year behind (she's 4th). At least according to this.

My kid's teacher told me that kids are placed in Lexia based on their weakest skill, not their overall level. Lexia then fills in any gaps. If kids are only missing a skill here or there, I believe they should be able to move up through levels fairly quickly. Their "level" doesnt mean much overall. For example, it's possible that your daughter got a low-ish placement because she has forgotten her parts of speech and needs review in that area, even though she reads above grade level.

About 45%of my fourth graders are at levels 16-19. I do have several level 1 English learners and a few students with significant LDs. There are several students who were reading at or above grade level according to assessments we used last year (PALs and BAS), who are below on Lexia. However, I can see from the work that they are submitting that they could definitely use the instruction they are receiving in Lexia.

A private tutor service caught my son up in 9 months. He was much farther behind than your daughter too. Please don’t feel discouraged. But you may need to pay.

Based on those 3 levels if your child is 6 months below grade level, she should be working with a specialist.

OK. Thank you. Now that you mention it I did hear about that testing but never saw the results. I'll ask about it.

What level is she on? My 2nd grader is halfway through level 11, which matches the chart.

Sounds like my DD might be more behind than what we are hearing from her teacher (which is not much). Thank you for sharing.

You can’t do your assigned lexia time and do something you enjoy (like a game on reflex) while avoiding what the kid finds boring or too hard. I kind of wonder if this has anything to do with it. While they would eventually notice if a kid is avoiding some of the skills in reflex, with lexia there is no avoiding ever.

This is OP and fortunately my DD likes this new app. Maybe it will help her catch up.

My APS 4th grader just moved up to Level 17. She is not tagged as GT and always seems to be placed in the middle level reading groups back when school was actually happening.

to be on target she should be finishing level 18 at the end of 4th grade.

APS is being very cagey about this because the lexia data is showing that many many kids are way behind in reading.

Yep. They don't want to disclose this. My 5th grader tested around grade 3 1/2. Not sure actual levels-was never told. I know he's on the lower end of his peers.

OP, good luck getting an assessment or tutoring from APS. You will most likely have to go private if you want it done in any reasonable time frame and without a fight. They fight tooth and nail not to test. Even if they do test any reading pull outs are not very productive. You're better off finding a private tutor.

Thank you. I was looking at the old chart with fewer levels.

Would love to hear if other 4th graders are in the 16-18 range.

DD just moved up to level 14 and we are wondering how far off she is from her peers (not just the chart).

My DD seems behind in her reading and I'm trying to get a gauge for how far behind she is to figure out if we should request an assessment and/or tutoring. The teacher seems to think she's not far too behind but hasn't really provided a lot of details or answered our questions directly.

If your kid is in 4th grade...
- what Lexia level are they on?
- are they generally behind, on target, or ahead of the grade reading level?

Should they be finishing level 16 by the end of this year to be on target?

She's in APS - not sure if the other school districts are also using Lexia.
