I would want to know if the 2.6 was:
Low grades across the board or failures and As.
Failures due to lack of understanding or not submitting work at all.

College isn’t for everyone and community college is a cost effective way to determine that. We know multiple families that learned that $30k later. It’s money that could have been spent on trade school or as an investment in a small business. Now their child is struggling to get on their feet without those funds.

OP ignore this one. Yes, I would have them apply to a rolling admissions school that you pretty much know is a slam dunk.

Wait for a few more to come in and be prepared to add some extra's for regular decision. Admissions are somewhat random. He may be waitlisted at a match school and get in to a reach. His application just needs to find the right person who will give him a chance. Good luck!

Did you not see the title “be kind” and the request for “no snarks”? There are many kids who are average or perform in the average range academically because they are doing other things in life.

I think pp’s questions are perfectly fine. It is fair question to ask what problems prohibited kid from performing better. Could be very relevant in college.

I had a 2.7 gpa in highschool b/c I had a messed up home life. I went on to a commuter uni which I paid for with gov. help. Graduated with a GPA in low 3s. GRE good enough but not great. Given all that I did in uni, I earned a free ride to grad school at a new england uni and have a doctorate degree and run a dc based nonprofit.

What I didn't have was privilege but i've got it now.

Beloit. Fabulous for my HS classmate who was pushed ahead in school when he wasn't ready. Now an in-demand software engineer with a great life. That's a high SAT IMO.

It's hard to be sure, without # of APs and scores, but our DC had a similar SAT score and likely once you account for public vs private a similar GPA.

Admittedly DC's EC's were relatively strong but we were surprised that DC got into 9 ABET accredited engineering schools and was wait listed at another.

We had the opposite problem. After all the results were in, DC thought they had applied too low.

DC is now a senior, loves their chosen school and their college GPA proves they didn't need a more reach school.

Try rolling schools like Arizona State, Alabama and Ole Miss. He will find a place, don't worry.

CC should not be excluded. Your kid (and you) will have swallow pride and reset path forward. I’d also definitely include more lower tier schools.

My DC has a 2.6 GPA (lower if you look at only core classes) at a (not big 3) DMV private. 1380 SAT. Applied EA to 10 colleges recommended by school counselor. Only one college has rolling admissions and it was on the “match” list. Wait listed. Very concerned DC won’t get in to college. Has anyone else been in a similar grade/SAT situation? If so, where did your child get accepted? Wondering whether DC should apply to a couple more safeties RD. DC needs a small nurturing college with good supports (tutoring, writing center, approachable professors). Thank you. Please no snarks. And please no suggestions for community college. Thank you.
