A new iPad does not cost $650.

I never buy new anymore. I buy refurbished with a warranty. So many choices and much cheaper.

IPads are harder to fix than phones. I had a four year old ipad and a three year old iPhone, both of which had batteries that were draining really quickly, but otherwise working really well. Both out of Applecare warranty at that point. I brought the phone in for a new battery - $50, no question. So I said “oh, how much for a new iPad battery” and they said that those are expensive ($150, maybe) because the iPad design is not done to optimize access to the battery unlike the iPhone. Didn’t compare screen replacement costs because thankfully I haven’t needed those.

You're right.

I save by buying the cheapest $300 iPad instead of the $600+ models. Then when it breaks it's not so much to fix or replace.

This is why I always get a really really really cushiony iPad cover and even then it may not be enough against the clumsiness. Check them out on Amazon OP very worth it.

We have a first or second generation ipad. The screen cracked and was getting worse so I bought one of those screen protector sheets and the cracks haven't gotten worse in the last 3-4 years

I’ve had my iPad for 2 years. I’ve taken care of it. Never dropped it. No damage.

Well ... until yesterday, when I managed to not only crack the screen, but also bend it. I saw the damage and thought, “Ok well, I have AppleCare, so they’ll be able to fix it and it won’t be that expensive.”

I looked up when my AppleCare expired and it was on ... November 13th.

My iPad still works, but I doubt it will for long, since cracks tend to get worse, not stay the same.

To be honest, I’m frankly just amazed at how exceptionally 2020 it is for me to have broken my iPad in such a way that it’s probably not fixable (they can’t really drop a new screen onto a bent frame) less than a week after my AppleCare expired. A new screen is $650, which is less than a new iPad, but with a bent frame, it’s almost certainly not fixable at all.

I tell you this story to give you some comfort, in case you ever think you do stupid things.

My husband is a wonderful being who responded by: 1. Laughing because it’s really sort of funny; and 2. Promised to get me a new one for Hanukkah.
