We are strongly considering leaving after swearing we would be in the city forever, but we just need more space and a backyard which we won’t get in the city. Would really love to hear about others’ experiences.

No one. Native NYer here. None of my friends. It’s a big fat lie. Only people who moved to NY after college for a job for a few years have left.

+1. Truly depends on the circles you run it. It’s going to sound annoying but we live in the West Village and are all either native New Yorkers or have been here for 15-30 years and have creative jobs that pretty much only exist in the city (restaurant owner, business owner, auctioneer, etc.). We own and send our kids to private school and most have a house outside of the city. Of my circle, I don’t know anyone who has left for the suburbs. Why would we?

I miss the uws, but would have gone crazy in a small apartment with kids, and everywhere in the city was just feeling crowded and claustrophobic.

I love westchester. Truly happy here.

Will also add that I dreaded the school admission process in the city. Everything felt so overhyped and way too high pressure. I didn’t want to raise kids in an overly competitive environment. In addition, we are UMC and I didn’t want my kids to feel financial pressure around the wealth you see among a lot of families raising kids in Manhattan. A generalization, maybe, but I just wanted something a bit lower key. Westchester was a great compromise.

DH is a native New Yorker and before we got married made me promise to find a job outside of the state because he was done with the city.

I'd suggest, if possible, to rent a place in the burbs for a month or two, or even until the end the pandemic, and then return to NYC and see how you feel.

I'm not a native NY, but I miss it terribly. However, because I now have kids, I'm glad for the green spaces and being able to have a backyard.

Our lease is up January 1 and we have no idea what our plan is. We own a condo in DC with renters in it through July 1 but that leaves us with time to decide if we want to resign a lease in NYC or go back to DC earlier than expected.... which leaves us with 6 months to figure out. We moved up here in 2018 and wanted to stay 5 years before moving back to DC for good.

DCUM is very tribal. No one from other parts are welcome 'round here. Especially if your OOS kid in public HS got into UVA.

PP who moved from Brooklyn and back. I am not a native NY, but my parents moved to NYC in 1992 when I was a teenager. How old are you? If you are about my age, by the time we finished college, NYC was on the rise, and it kept getting better and better. That’s why people stayed after they had kids and after the kids started schools. I am not sure this will still hold for people who have little kids now. I, personally, am staying for many reasons, but I see the other side too.

I know several people who left over the past 6 months but too early to tell if they are happy.

My sample size is small, but a friend left Brooklyn for - gasp! - Rochester. Said they were tired of living on top of each other and wanted a house. Granted, they have two kids and are not native NYers.

I’ve left Brooklyn for the suburbs and came back in a few years. I know other people who did the same. But it was before Covid and, most important, before Di Blasio and Carranza. The latter scares me more.
