Sidney was a boy's name first, becoming popular after the American Revolution into the nineteenth century, and peaked in popularity in the 1910s. It started to be used as a girl's name in the 1990s. Sidney Bechet, Sydney Pollack, Sidney Lumet, Sidney Poitier, Sid Caesar, the fictional Sydney Carton, etc. Still used as a boys name -- there is a Canadian NHL player named Sidney Crosby, an NFL player named Sidney Jones, etc.

It was originally a male name, but has been coopted as a female name, like so many others: Courtney, Ashley, Whitney... Soon there won’t be any male names left.

Is Adelaide also a place in Australia? It would go right by me. I don't love either name. We have a new baby Sidney (Sid) in our family so I have gotten used to it. My kids automatically went to the mean kid next door in Toy Story.

Makes me think, those two took an Australian honeymoon.

You could also have gone with Alice for Alice springs and Darwin, in honor of the train

No. Way too on the nose.

I mean, if you want to honor a place like that, do something more subtle.

Any name or name combination that is effectively a punchline is probably not a wise idea.

It's a great joke, but don't make your kids' names jokes.

My husband and I cannot settle this debate and I told him I will post on DCUM for arbitration. (Hey, entertainment!). When we were expecting b/g twins my husband really pushed for these two as names. One had a family meaning and we honeymooned in Australia so he thought it would be great. We ended up naming our twins something totally different but once in a while this comes up as a joke. What think you, DCUM? Sidney and Adelaide, yay or nay?
