Nanny here-

I’ll be super sad and disappointed if I don’t receive a good bonus this year. I’ve been working all through the pandemic and took on A LOT of extra work now that the housekeeper doesn’t come anymore. Now I’m a chef for the parents and the kids, do all the laundry, clean kitchen dishes constantly etc. I work really hard and spend hours researching recipes now that apparently it’s my job to feed the parents. If I don’t get a bonus, then I’ll be making tacos and pasta from now on. I’m not spending hours chopping onions and marinating and making sauces if my effort isn’t recognized. I took on a lot of extra unpaid work and I won’t continue doing it if I don’t receive a bonus.

Your nanny is counting on a bonus unless you set expectations a long time ago. Don't screw this up!

Two weeks pay for a great nanny. If you give her a one week bonus she’ll think she did not perform well.

Generally one or two weeks pay.

But look, if you’re struggling this year because of covid, your nanny will understand and maybe give her an additional week or two off or other perks. Just be upfront with her and honest.

Our nanny was hired in December and we wrote a $2,500 bonus for good work at the year mark in her contract. Nanny is extraordinary so we upped it to $3,500 (more that two weeks salary). This was DH’s idea as it’s what done in his business.

For Christmas and her birthday we give her gifts (new sweater, framed photo of her with our child, new backpack).

This year, I’d do 2 weeks. It’s hard as H to entrain kids during Covid.

We always did $500. It's a good round number.

This year I paid for 4 months of not coming to work and I don't know what to do at Christmas.

A week's pay. We are adding to that this year though, since the kids have been doing online school and DH and I have been working from home since March.
