Well, considering the fact that Trump is actively trying to suppress the vote for millions of absentee voters (and you know military service folks make up a bunch of that group, there will be anger.

He would probably rather resign as a form of protest than deal with the resulting $h1tshow.

Per NBC, Esper has not resigned but has just drafted the normal undated letter of resignation for the next president to accept or deny.
