It's been a lifesaver for us. There are only four in my DCs group. I'm just grateful that the school didn't cancel when only half of those who signed up showed up. The kids have tech and headphones and a daily outing but maybe that's just for little kids. It's working and I hope it continues.

With in person at friendship, they’re still online with their teacher as if at home. Have to wear a mask. There are 3 students at the hub in my sons class and whenever someone comes off mute there it’s an echo. Really annoying. They rarely go outside and half the time they don’t have the materials for that day project

I've never heard of Friendship, but my kid is basically doing a "CARES" classroom. I'm a DCUM whiner.

I'm at one of the charters mentioned in this thread. What charters are doing is nowhere near the scale of what DCPS has to do. I'm proud of my charter's efforts but even the largest charters can't serve as an exemplar for a system with 45,000+ kids and hundreds of schools. So, to your point, let's not drag charters into this fight; don't take a shot at us and don't use us to put down DCPS.


Of course charters (and privates, and Catholics, and other large urban school districts) can serve as exemplars. COVID doesn't distinguish between charter and district teachers. The difference is politics and political will, not COVID.

Wha? Why are you attacking the fact that a relatively large charter system is providing in-person attendance? I think someone has a self-serving narrative, and it's not OP.

Seems like a good test for those charters, to see what the impact would be on transmission. It could also help the schools work out any kinks about bringing more kids into classrooms.

I read through their full post, and wasn't clear to me who was staffing the students who would be there, and then how they'd be continuing virtual learning for families who opt to remain with DL. anyone know?

It seems like a lot of the charters have these kinds of situations, at least for the kids who need it most.

There are also many, many "distance learning camps" run by summer camp programs, YMCA, after school programs, etc. that are performing a similar service.

I haven't heard of any issues with these in terms of covid cases. Seems like a good thing to have.

good. Families who don't need this don't have to use it, but there are kids who will be safer and learning more at these sites. It will be very interesting to see how many kids participate and if infection-control protocols are successful.
