You don't want a jacket that is too warm, OP. Many kids run hot, and then they sweat in their coat, try to take it off, etc. If you can afford it, get a mid weight jacket for 30-50 degree weather, and then a heavy down or down alternative coat for under 30 degrees.

LOL if anything your kids are much more likely to pick up germs from playing/spending indoors than running around on the playground.

They both got flu shot already, and I cannot imagine how a kid without single coughing or runny nose at all throughout the whole winter. I understand the precaution, but it is difficult for parents that have to work.
Like everyone said, a warmer jacket won't prevent colds. Also, know that nothing you do will prevent runny noses when its cold outside either. When you step outside and get a sniffle, that's because your nose is protecting itself from drying out by producing more mucus. Having a runny nose in and of itself is not proof of a cold.

Why do people still think too can sick by being in the cold? Of course a warm coat is great but it has nothing to do with protecting from germs. Good hand washing, eating well, etc. are the only thing that will help. This winter is certainly going to suck with lots more days when kids can’t go to school for minor symptoms that in other years we would have sent them with. It just is what it is.

A cold is caused by a virus OP not by the clothing you wear. Being cold may lower your immune system making it easier to catch the cold though.
You do not need to support animal cruelty to keep your kids warm though.
Get a good quality fleece your kids car wear in their car seats then get either a qood quality west to layer over the top or another jacket to layer over the top once they get out of the car.

You don't need a down jacket specifically. You just need to keep the kids warm at all times. Best way is to dress them in layers, so that they can take layers on/put layers on as they get warm and cold. If they're in layers, you don't need a down jacket on top of that -- a regular winter jacket will do.
